Quebec City's Aux Anciens Canadiens Restaurant has been serving authentic Quebecois cuisine for over 40 years. The fixed price, full lunch menu is a particularly good deal, and extremely popular with visitors. It includes wine or beer, soup, a main dish (Quebec meats are best) and dessert for $17.00 and is available until 5:45 pm.
- Good lunch value menu for authentic Quebec cuisine
- Intimate setting in ancestral home dating from 1676
- Convenient location in Upper Town, Old Quebec
- Dinner menu gets pricey
- Expensive A la carte desserts
- Five thematic dining rooms on two levels
- Good value hotel and dining packages available
- Complete wine list heavy on French selections
Aux Anciens Canadiens Restaurant in the upper section of Old Town, like its neighbor, the Chateau Frontenac Hotel, is quintessential Quebec City.
Consider a stay and eat package which can work out to be a good deal especially for the one night package at around $100.00 per person including dinner and breakfast.
Unless you're having the fixed price, all inclusive meal it's best not to order dessert which gets expensive at nearly $11.00 each. A drink from the predominately French wine list is included with the full lunch menu.
Prices rise considerably for dinner. The dishes of local meats such as duck, elk and caribou from the "Quebec Specialties" section of the menu are tender, sweet and juicy when cooked medium rare. The American elk, listed as wapiti could be mistaken for a very tender beef steak.
Escargots are a good choice for an appetizer as they are served in a rich butter/garlic sauce, while the very sweet, strong caramel - flavored maple syrup pie is recommended as a dessert pick if you're having the full meal special.
