Montreal, Canada’s top vacation city, is the world’s third largest French speaking metropolis. Even so, English speaking visitors will have no problems as almost everyone speaks some English. A knowledge of French phrases are useful, however.
Visitors to Montreal will find great restaurants, music and entertainment catering to all tastes, unique festivals and museums, excellent walking tours, good value accommodations and clean, safe, efficient public transportation all at reasonable prices.
Montreal is a very safe city. Montrealers love to go out so the streets are lively at all hours even in the middle of winter. The biggest danger you are likely to encounter is frostbite. It’s best to check the weather a day or so before your arrival.
When visiting from November to March, be sure to bring a warm coat, hat, earmuffs, scarf and thick mittens. July and August can get uncomfortably hot and humid.
Since January 23, 2007:
Everyone including Canadian and American citizens, who enter the United States by air must have a valid passport.
Starting in 2008 (the date keeps changing) a passport will be required to return to the United States by land and sea (including travel by ferry).
It is strongly recommended that travelers carry a valid passport at all times.
