Milos Restaurant is well situated along a lively stretch of Parc Avenue in Montreal's Mile End neighborhood. Walking into Milos is reminiscent of walking onto a Greek island thanks to the large whitewashed brick staircase at the entrance. The place has the casual feel of a Greek taverna (its origin) but with an understated elegance that appeals to sophisticated diners thanks to the formal white tablecloths and strong lighting. Patrons can see the fish resting on a large ice bed and watch their food being cooked from the open concept kitchen.
Tempura - like vegetables and saganaki cheese are fried just right to match the tender crispiness of the fish selections, that for the most part are lightly fried in good quality olive oil and lightly dusted with oregano or other spices. Starting with a shrimp brochette and moving onto a pompano plate (or other fish of the day) that's large enough for two is a good option as the numerous wait staff wisely advise diners to share dishes.
Solo diners should try to arrive between 5:30 and 6:30 or after 5:30 on Sunday for the fixed price meal of the day - antipasto, pan fried squid, char and fresh fruit.
For the best in Greek wine order the Boutari. A cheaper option is Retsina. Fortunately, the wine list has been expanded to include some decent French and American options.
