Included in the top 10 best cycling routes by National Geographic, The Route Verte (green route) makes Quebec a top cycling destination.

1. Montreal Bike Fest

A week long annual cycling event; Montreal Bike Fest is a favorite of urban cyclists everywhere. As many as 30,000 cyclists have been registered for the final day Island Tour, when the city shuts down 30 miles of the most scenic roads on the island to vehicular traffic.

Other highlights include a final Saturday cycling tour of Montreal attractions and the preceding night's 15 - mile long Night Owl Tour and street party.

2. The Grand Tour

2008 marks the 15th anniversary of The Grand Tour. Over 400 miles are covered in seven days and participants are welcome to complete the whole trip or select parts. The well-organized tour averages 45 miles a day from village to village.

Fully functioning campsites are set up each night to provide beds, showers, hot meals and even massages for weary cyclists who are invited to proceed at their own pace while their luggage is transported. Participants can even complete sections of the route in the transport van.

3. Le P'tit Train du Nord

Just 20 minutes north of Montreal puts cyclists on an abandoned rail track that takes in pine forests, rivers and lakes.

Named for an abandoned train route that transported skiers north, the 120 mile trail attracts cyclists from around the world. The abandoned railway stations en route serve as cafes, rest stops and bike repair outlets.

In winter, the trail is a mecca for cross country skiers and snowmobilers. A variety of accommodations are available all along the trail.
